Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I get business license information?
Ohio does not require all businesses to have a generic business license. Our business information kit will explain the licenses and permits required for the specific business you want to start.
Are grants available for starting a business? Where do I get grant information?
As a general rule, grant dollars are not available to help start a small business at the state or federal level. The federal website for grant programs is www.grants.gov, or ask your local library for a copy of The Grants Guide.
How can I get a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) loan?
SBA loans are administered exclusively through programs that are designed to encourage commercial lenders to make loans directly to business owners and entrepreneurs. Contact your local Ohio Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for assistance with SBA loan programs.
How important is my credit score when I am seeking a commercial loan?
A borrower's credit score is critical to the approval of a commercial loan.
Do I need experience in the business I am considering?
No experience is required to start a business, but your chances of success are going to be much greater if you engage in a business opportunity that you understand, as opposed to a business opportunity that you do not understand.
Who are the most important advisors for my business?
You will benefit the most from an accountant, an attorney, an insurance agent, and a banker. You should also include the business advisor from your local Small Business Development Center (SBDC).
What is the one item I should focus on to increase my odds of success?
A business plan should be your guide along the journey to success. If you don't have one, your local Small Business Development Center (SBDC) will assist you in creating one.
