Deploying Renewable Energy in Ohio - $25,353,434
This initiative is divided into three programs: (1) renewing manufacturing through deployment, (2) transforming waste to energy, and (3) advancing biofuels beyond the basics. The program will utilize a variety of renewable energy sources, including solar, wind, biomass waste and related technologies.
The City of Cincinnati was awarded $402,937 to install a 93 kilowatt solar array on the roof of the Duke Energy Convention Center. The 396 Sharp modules were installed by Ohio-based Third Sun Solar & Wind, Ltd. This system will complement the energy efficiency retrofit that the convention center is currently undergoing and reduce the convention center's carbon dioxide emissions by 147,422 pounds per year.

The City of Cincinnati Parks was awarded $583,418 to install a 170 kilowatt rooftop solar array. The 60 Sharp modules, located throughout 13 park sites, are used as a training and job creation tool for urban youth as well as an educational outreach tool for the general public.

Forest City Residential Management Inc. was been awarded $1.14 million to install a 350 kilowatt rooftop solar array system on three of The Midtown Towers' residential building complexes. The project site is located in Cleveland's main manufacturing district and will prevent 345 short tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere.

The Greater Cincinnati Water Works was awarded $775,665 for the installation of a 280 kilowatt rooftop solar array installed by Third Sun Solar & Wind, Ltd. This system is one component of their total project to conduct energy efficiency retrofits at their facility.

Hull & Associates, Inc. was awarded $405,931 for the installation of a 93 kilowatt rooftop solar array. The 396 Sharp modules were installed by Ohio-based Third Sun Solar & Wind, Ltd. This installation was one of the first installations in Ohio to combine new commercial facilities and solar energy on a brownfield site. The project is estimated to produce more than 98 megawatt hours of renewable energy annually and will reduce greenhouse gases by 69.17 short tons.

Hull & Associates Inc, PNA Solar Project

Hull & Associates, Inc. was awarded $880,782 to install a 250 kilowatt solar array project on Pilkington North America, Inc. (PNA)'s Plant 21 site. The 3,336 locally manufactured First Solar modules were installed by Ohio-based installer Advanced Distributed Generation. This installation was one of the first installations in Ohio to be completed on a building that was designed as a solar-ready facility.

IGS Energy

Ohio-based IGS Energy was awarded $401,369 for the installation of a 93 kilowatt rooftop solar array. The 396 Sharp modules, installed by Ohio-based Third Sun Solar & Wind, Ltd., helped IGS Energy achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for their new headquarters. This project, which was one of the first installations on a solar-ready commercial facility, is estimated to produce more than 98megawatt hours per year of renewable energy and reduce greenhouse emissions by 69.17 short tons.

The Jewish Community Federation of Cleveland was awarded $360,294 for the installation of a 76 kilowatt rooftop solar array. The 324 Sharp modules assist in the Jewish Community's goal to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for their new headquarters. The system was installed by Ohio-based Repower Solutions.

The METRO Regional Transit Authority was awarded $1 million for the deployment of a 488 kilowatt rooftop solar array located on its central bus barn. The installation of these 2,080 Sharp modules, combined with the existing 133 kilowatt solar array, makes this system one of the largest single-array systems in Ohio.

The Ohio Department of Mental Health was awarded $652,932 for the deployment of a 232 kilowatt rooftop solar array , which will reduce their carbon dioxide emissions by 375,709 tons per year. The 990 Sharp modules were installed by Ohio-based Third Sun Solar & Wind Power, Ltd.

Solar Vision LLC was awarded $831,637 to install a 220 kilowatt solar array system on four carport structures in the parking lot of the Athens City Community Center. Solar Vision partnered with three additional Ohio-based companies, Dovetail Solar & Wind, Proteck Park, and Schieber & Associates, for the implementation of these Ohio-manufactured solar carport structures.

The Toledo Museum of Art was awarded $422,904 for the installation of a 100kilowatt commercial solar rooftop grid system. This is the second system installed on the museum's roof, giving the museum a total capacity of 201 kilowatts of solar-generated energy. The project utilized locally manufactured First Solar panels that were installed by local installer, Advanced Distributed Generation.

Parkway Local Schools, Renewable Energy / Conversation Project

Parkway Local Schools was awarded $16,080 to install 16 EnerWorks solar thermal systems. The installed systems will save the school district $48,299 in annual electricity costs and $28,879 in annual gas costs. This project is part of a state-of-the-art learning center to educate the public on sustainability practices.

Archbold Area Local Schools was awarded $1.23 million for their Archbold Local Schools-Fulton Wind Consortia project. After participating in Green Energy Ohio's one-year anemometer loan program, sponsored by the Ohio Department of Development, the school chose to install a 750 kilowatt HPM America wind turbine. The turbine will be installed by Ohio-based The Renaissance Group.

The Cuyahoga County Board of Commissioners has been awarded $1 million from the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds Wind Turbine Project. Once installed in the county fairgrounds, the single 600 kilowatt utility scale wind turbine will be used as an educational and job training tool for the soon-to-be-constructed Energy Center with the collaboration of Polaris Career Center.

The Kenston Local School District was awarded $1.11 million for the installation of a 750 kilowatt wind turbine. Kenston Schools has partnered with Ohio-based Parker Hannifin to showcase this wind turbine as an example of an Ohio designed and manufactured system.
Lincoln Electric Company was awarded $1.13 million for the installation of a 2.5 megawatt Kenersys wind turbine at its Euclid manufacturing plant. This demonstration project is the first installed in the United States by this manufacturer. With positive results, Kenersys may establish manufacturing in the United States and enable Lincoln Electric to offset a substantial portion of their energy costs.

Toledo Electric Joint Apprentice and Training Committee

The Toledo Electric Joint Apprentice and Training Committee was awarded $420,000 to install a single 100 kilowatt Northern Power Systems wind turbine. The wind turbine is used as a hands-on tool that will train more than 1,000 journeymen and apprentices to provide maintenance on wind turbines.

French Creek BioEnergy, LLC was awarded $1 million to own and operate an anaerobic digester for the City of North Ridgeville's "French Creek" Waste Water Treatment Plant. The treatment plant will supply the digester with 20.5 wet tons per day of biosolids and a waste hauler will supply 57 wet tons per day of regional biosolids, mixed soaps and food waste. The system will generate nearly 5.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity and 13,850 million BTUs of thermal heat annually.

Forest City Land Development, LLC was awarded $1 million to construct and operate an anaerobic digester at the previous General Motors Fisher Body Plant in Cleveland. A waste hauler will supply the digester with 88 wet tons per day of mixed biomass to generate more than 5 million kilowatt hours of electricity and 23,200 million BTUs of thermal heat annually.

Haviland Co. was awarded $1 million to own and operate an anaerobic digester in Paulding County. A waste hauler will supply the digester with 92 wet tons per day mixed biomass to generate more than 8.6 million kilowatt hours of electricity and 40,600 million BTUs of thermal heat annually.

Lime Lake Energy, LLC was awarded $1 million to own and operate an anaerobic digester on 200 acres of property undergoing reclamation by PPG Industries, Inc. A waste hauler will supply 52.1 wet tons per day of mixed biomass to generate more than 3.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity and 16,800 million BTUs of thermal heat annually.

Northwest BioEnergy was awarded $1 million to own and operate an anaerobic digester in Lucas County. A waste hauler will supply the digester with 90 tons of wet tons per day mixed biomass to generate more than 5.3 million kilowatt hours of electricity and 25,900 million BTUs of thermal heat annually.

Sidco-Development, Inc. was awarded $1 million to own and operate an anaerobic digester to transform regional biomass waste into renewable energy to power the neighboring limestone mining operations in St. Clairsville, Ohio. A waste hauler will supply the digester with 90 wet tons per day of mixed biomass to generate more than 7.5 million kilowatt hours of electricity and 34,700 million BTUs thermal heat annually.

Wooster Renewable Energy, LLC was awarded $1 million to own and operate an anaerobic digester at the City of Wooster's Water Pollution Control Plant. The treatment plant will supply the digester with 73 wet tons per day of biosolids, and a waste hauler will supply 60 wet tons per day of regional food waste to generate more than 5.7 million kilowatt hours of electricity and 25,230 million BTUs of thermal heat annually.

Zanesville Energy, LLC was awarded $1 million to own and operate an integrated anaerobic digestion system in Muskingum County, Ohio. The system will lower Zanesville Energy's operating costs by reducing or eliminating the liquid effluent treatment and handling by producing a salable compost-like material. It will also substantially increase the energy generation potential of the current operation. A waste hauler will supply the digester with 84 wet tons per day of mixed biomass to generate 5.5 million kilowatt of electricity and 19,620 million BTUs of thermal heat annually.

Central Ohio BioEnergy, LLC was awarded $1 million to install a public compressed natural gas fueling station in Columbus, Ohio at the current anaerobic digestion system which is located on Jackson Pike.

Targeting Industry Efficiency - $22,675,653
This initiative will improve the sustainability of Ohio's industrial facilities by reducing greenhouse gases and other criteria pollutant emissions in non-attainment areas, build expertise and awareness in industrial carbon management projects, and assess the economics of carbon reduction activities in the industrial sector. This initiative will incentivize efficiency investments for companies not otherwise served by utility efficiency programs.
Appleton Papers was awarded $303,312 to install a new energy efficient air compressor.

American Trim was awarded $994,000 for the installation of a state-of-the-art coating line that applies a protective film to steel substrates for the advanced energy, automotive, and appliance industries. The project will create 39 full-time manufacturing jobs and is anticipated to have an energy savings of 16,800 million BTUs per year.

Cambria FabShop-Cleveland was awarded $21,450 to upgrade existing lighting with energy efficient fluorescent light fixtures.

Cleveland Gear was awarded $145,037 to upgrade existing lighting with T8 lighting. The existing HVAC system with be replaced with a two new cooling units, two air handlers, a new boiler and individual radiators.

Clow Water Systems was awarded $515,844 for the installation of regenerative burners in the high-heat zone of their anneal oven. By preheating the combustion air, the project will result in a 30 percent reduction in natural gas usage. This project will result in 40 jobs and assist the company in lowering its operating costs to be more competitive in the global economy.

Delphi Automotive Systems, LLC was awarded $979,000 to convert their boilers from steam heating to gas-fired heating. They will also replace four tube-fired boilers with three steam generators that are more energy efficient. The total annual energy savings is estimated at $388,378.

Edge Plastics, Inc. was awarded $651,540 to install two injection molding machines that are used to manufacture products such as large plastic household storage containers. The project will result in an energy savings of 35 percent and will create or retain 44 jobs.

Empire Die Casting Company, Inc. was awarded $835,000 to implement a highly advanced aluminum melting, distribution, and holding system that operates at a higher level of thermal efficiency and lower melt loss at its foundry. The project will result in eight jobs and help to retain 157 existing jobs at the facility.

Eurand was awarded $53,050 for the installation of energy efficient lighting, to replace existing compressed air system with a heatless desiccant dryer system, and to implement waste heat recovery systems.

Fireline was awarded $114,518 to replace existing lighting with more energy efficientT8 and T5 lighting. They will also replace kiln furniture on 74 kiln cars with light weight extruded butts and silicon carbide support beams.

General Mills was awarded $232,025 to install a heat exchanger in dryer exhaust to heat dryer inlet air. The will replace the existing compressed air system with new compressed air system optimization with variable frequency drives. Variable frequency drives will also be used with the pump motors to optimize pumping energy. They will also install HVAC controls.

The General Motors plant in Defiance was awarded $518,233 to install desiccant-based dehumidification equipment on a cupola furnace that produces molten gray cast iron that is cast by their foundry to make automotive engine cylinder blocks and cylinder heads. The project will save energy, reduce raw material consumption, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and allow the facility to be more competitive by reducing its overall annual costs by $515,013.

Kovatch Castings, Inc. in Uniontown was awarded $1 million to replace three inefficient ovens with two energy efficient gas ovens at their foundry which produces components for the aerospace, aviation and military industries. The project will reduce gas use by 47 percent and create 45 jobs

The project is expected to save more than 2.67 megawatt hours of electricity per year.

New Horizons Baking Company was awarded $1 million to install new, efficient bake ovens that produce bread for fast food restaurants in seven states. The project increased energy efficiency at the facility by 25 percent and helped to retain 161 existing jobs.

Orlando Baking Company was awarded $486,807 to install energy efficient lighting and variable frequency drives on large equipment, and replace old steam boilers with more efficient, modular boilers and improve the steam distribution system throughout the facility. The project resulted in an annual energy savings of 837 megawatt hours and 5,995 million BTUs, along with the creation or retention of 10 jobs.

This project created or retained 109 jobs.

Techmetals was awarded $271,550 for the installation of fabricated covers that will provide insulation for tanks, piping, pumps, boiler and ventilation system.

Wyandot, Inc. was awarded $175,000 to install exhaust heat recovery equipment on tortilla oven stacks on two processing lines and integrated waste heat utilization in oil fryer heat exchangers. The project will save $110,000 per year and retain 10 full-time jobs.

Setting the Stage for Ohio's Carbon Management Strategy - $500,000
This initiative will utilize an integrated collaborative planning process to address energy policy related to energy diversity, sustainability, and innovative policies to help secure a reliable energy future. This initiative will develop energy policy considerations for the next five to 10 years that will assess the opportunities and risks for Ohio's economy around key energy issues including carbon policy and market options. It will cover the following activities: carbon planning, energy use and modeling, and policy and energy legislation. Ohio University and The Ohio State University have collaborated to outline a 17-month work plan that provides a complete inventory of carbon emissions with the development of a web-based system to facilitate further collaboration among interested partners. The team will conduct a comprehensive assessment of the opportunities and risks of carbon policies to Ohio industries with a special appreciation of the impact to Ohio's energy intensive industries that are vital to state's economy. An external advisory board will be utilized in sharing information and evaluation, and a final report will describe the strengths and weaknesses for a suite of policy tools available to Ohio leaders. Finally, the project includes the development of an energy-economic modeling policy tool to allow the state to analyze the economic, environmental, and social impacts of possible carbon policies. A presentation was delivered on October 5, 2010 in Columbus.
Making Efficiency Work - $15,988,580
Through this initiative, Ohio will engage with private and public businesses and institutions of higher education to measurably improve the energy efficiency of Ohio's new and existing building stock. Ohio will build partnerships with the building and contractor industries, conduct pilots of above-code new commercial and residential construction, and incentivize the participation of entrepreneurial and minority-based enterprise. The initiative will reduce energy waste in existing buildings and new construction by using such techniques as equipment retrofits, and green building techniques and technologies.
Bates Property was awarded $126,368 to install energy efficiency equipment in its Stanley Steemer International facility. The improvements consist of the replacing two of large HVAC units (75 short tons and 90 short tons). This will result in an energy savings of 422.32 million BTUs.

CAC Club Ventures LLC was awarded $1 million to replace its antiquated HVAC system with a new energy efficient system that includes water cooled heat pumps, a cooling tower, and a heat exchanger. The project is one component of a total rehabilitation of the Cleveland Athletic Club building, which was constructed in 1912. The projected annual energy cost savings is $162,472.

The Cleveland Public Theatre in the Gordon Square Arts District was awarded $1 million to install a variable refrigerant flow high efficiency HVAC system. As a result of the installation of the new HVAC system, the Theatre will now be able to operate year round. The projected annual energy cost savings is $123,064.

Edison Welding Institute (EWI) was awarded $125,000 to install multiple building energy efficient improvements which will include LED lighting and HVAC upgrades. This is expected to reduce energy usage by over 1,650 million BTUs per year.

Forest City Commercial Management, Inc. was awarded $313,000 to install a steam turbine powered generator that will deliver electric power to Tower City Center. This turbine generator will convert waste heat to electric power. The projected annual energy savings is 4,754 million BTUs per year.

The Grace Hospital was awarded $653,597 to install energy efficient lighting, insulation, building automation systems. The existing HVAC system will be upgraded. The Hospital will also perform energy modeling, and commissioning of the installed systems. The proposed improvements are projected to reduce natural gas consumption by 61 percent.

Hippodrome/Colony Historical Theatre Association was awarded $959,312 to install a water-sourced geothermal heating and cooling system. The Theatre will also replace inefficient doors and windows, and convert existing lighting to LED-based lighting. These upgrades will save more than 66 percent of the Theatre's energy usage, for an estimated cost savings of $64,000 per year.

The Historic Central Plaza was awarded $250,000 for HVAC energy efficiency improvements at the Chase Tower, located in downtown Canton, Ohio. The existing system was a chilled water air handling structure with one air handler per floor and a large central chiller. A central steam boiler served heat to most of the building. The new system is comprised of 37 water source heat pumps, a 40 ton water source heat pump to provide chilled water, a 20 ton air cooled chiller, condensing hot water boilers and roof top air conditioners. The proposed project also includes adding energy sub-metering systems, multiple air handlers and pump replacements to further increase energy savings and promote tenant awareness of energy consumption. The total project cost for this project is $1,274,480.

Hocking Technical College was awarded $444,777 to upgrade their HVAC system and to install control systems, such as day-lighting and occupancy sensors in classroom buildings and dormitories across the campus, including John Light Hall, Oakley Hall and Holl Lab.

Humility of Mary Health Partners was awarded $384,500 to upgrade the lighting systmes at two parking decks with LED fixtures and to re-commission the HVAC system at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown. The total projected annual energy cost savings is $243,043.

KCM I, LLC was awarded $500,000 for a new geothermal system for two historic buildings on the campus of Baldwin-Wallace College. The project anticipates annual energy cost savings of $28,282 and annual energy savings of 804 million BTU.

Lourdes College was awarded $976,798 to upgrade the air-conditioning system in the Mother Adelaide Hall by replacing window units with a central air conditioning system. They will also install occupancy sensors and controls, as well as replace motors with variable-frequency drives. The building retrofit also includes installing more efficient windows and lighting.

The Miamisburg Mound Community Improvement Corporation was awarded $261,381 for lighting upgrades, electronic HVAC controls, energy monitoring, tenant metering, and total building energy audits at the Mound Advanced Technology Center. The project will reduce electrical usage by 10 percent and natural gas usage by 16 percent.

Miracit Development Corporation, Inc. was awarded $670,921 to install a myriad of energy improvements at Mock Road Plaza such as replacing windows and doors, HVAC equipment, and light fixtures, as well as installing new roll-down window shutters, adding insulation to exterior walls, and replacing old refrigeration equipment with new energy efficient models. Expected energy savings will exceed 30 percent over the current building conditions.

Playhouse Square Foundation was awarded $441,750 to install steam traps, thermostatic controls to improve HVAC, and upgrade existing lighting systems at the proposed building. The expected energy saving will be approximately 9,982 MMBTU annually.

Summa Hospital Foundation was awarded $672,637 to install a variety an energy efficient HVAC equipment upgrades at the Wadsworth emergency expansion project. Barberton facility upgrades include replacing HVAC equipment that is over 30 years old. These expansion projects will create over 10% in energy efficiencies.

The Chef's Garden was awarded $600,000 for their project which will install 800 LED grow bulbs for their commercial greenhouse, a 95% high efficiency boiler system, an Argus 10 zone contract system (controls, heating, lighting, vents, shades), and VRE motorized shades for light and insulation control.

The Fine Arts Association was awarded $150,000 to upgrade the HVAC system, electrical systems, and install new energy efficient LED lighting and occupancy sensors at The Fine Arts Association facility. The project will reduce electrical usage by 58 percent and natural gas usage by 70 percent.

The Temple-Tifereth Israel was awarded $475,000 for their project which will replace two multi-zone air handling units (gas-fired unit heaters) that supply heating and cooling for 23 individual zones. Their project will install efficient chillers and boilers, as well as variable speed pumps and fans.

The United Retail Distribution Services, Inc. was awarded $104,882 to replace inefficient lighting systems at its distribution facility located in Troy, Ohio.

Wood County Hospital was awarded $163,125 for the installation of new energy efficient heat exchangers along with cooling tower water piping to cool its facility, as well as the replacement of T12 lighting fixtures with energy efficient T8 lighting fixtures. This project will save 2,839 million BTUs of energy and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 669 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

YWCA of Toledo was awarded $164,300 for energy efficiency improvements. The project will include replacement of the existing lighting with energy efficient fluorescent lighting, occupancy sensors, and windows throughout the facility. The window portion of the project will entail replacement of the single-glazed steel sash windows with new energy efficient double pane, insulated glass windows with thermal break frames to help in the elimination of heat loss.

YWCA Greater Cleveland was awarded $205,459 to install a new HVAC system at their office building with a projected savings of 44 percent in annual energy usage.
