LT. GOVERNOR TO HIGHLIGHT OHIO FUEL CELL POTENTIAL
Ohio Third Frontier Targets Growing Industry

North Canton  – Lieutenant Governor Lee Fisher to highlight the release of Ohio’s Fuel Cell Road Map at an address at the Ohio Fuel Cell Symposium, a gathering of leading producers of fuel cells and related technologies at Kent State University’s Stark Campus in a keynote address to be delivered this afternoon. Fisher will note targeted investments by Development’s Ohio Third Frontier Fuel Cell Program that have spurred significant industry growth amid rising demand for the technology.

“By supporting the development of fuel cell technology in our state, Ohio has built a comprehensive and dynamic industry network capable of meeting the growing demands of the new energy economy,” Lt. Governor Fisher said. “Collaboration among Ohio companies, organizations, and academic institutions, when combined with comprehensive programming like Ohio Third Frontier, enhances our state’s leadership position across the fuel cell value chain, from materials and components to systems development and manufacturing.”

According to the 2009 update of the Ohio Fuel Cell Roadmap, Ohio is on track to create a vibrant fuel cell industry encompassing fuel cell end-users, integrators, material suppliers and component suppliers as well as offering leading research and development and testing facilities supported by a talented workforce. The report indicates that Ohio’s fuel cell strategy has been successful in building a cluster of fuel cell activity and that continuation of program support is necessary to expanding its position in the industry.

The Ohio Fuel Cell Symposium is held annually in order to provide members of the Ohio Fuel Cell Coalition advocacy, education, and partnership opportunities. The Coalition is the only state-level trade association in the country representing the fuel cell industry. The Coalition, in partnership with the Taratec Corporation, published Ohio’s Fuel Cell Road Map in an effort to strengthen Ohio’s fuel cell industry and accelerate the expansion of the industry to global leadership in fuel cell technology and applications.

The Ohio Department of Development has invested more than $79 million in fuel cell projects in an effort to build upon Ohio’s significant intellectual and industry assets. The largest portion of that funding has come from the Ohio Third Frontier Fuel Cell Program, which has a sustained leverage ratio of four additional dollars invested for every one program dollar.
