GOVERNOR, FINGERHUT, PATT- MCDANIEL ANNOUNCE $1.5 MILLION
IN OHIO THIRD FRONTIER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM AWARDS
Twelve Awards to Link Ohio College Students with Opportunities 

COLUMBUS – Governor Ted Strickland, Eric Fingerhut, Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents and Chair of the Ohio Third Frontier Commission, and Lisa Patt-McDaniel, Interim Director of the Ohio Department of Development and Commission member, today announced that the Commission recommended 12 organizations to continue to serve as brokers of Ohio Third Frontier Internship Program funds. Today was also Chancellor Fingerhut’s first meeting as the newly designated Chair of the Ohio Third Frontier Commission. The 12 organizations will be eligible to receive a share of the $1.5 million provided by Ohio Third Frontier to the Internship Program in Fiscal Year 2010. The awards are contingent upon State Controlling Board approval.  

“The Ohio Third Frontier Internship Program links bright minds with innovative companies, creating opportunities for individual students, companies, and industries to grow,” Fingerhut said. 

"Our state’s young talent must be assured that they have access to the best in professional development and employment here at home in Ohio,” Patt-McDaniel said.

The organizations designated to serve as brokers are responsible for matching students in their geographic region or with a specific industry. 

Fiscal Year 2010 Ohio Third Frontier Internship Program Awards 

The two newly designated organizations are: 

Northeast Ohio Council on Higher Education, located in Cleveland, will provide regionally based opportunities that strengthen the link between higher education and the business community in the Northeast Ohio region. 

BioOhio, located in Columbus, will provide statewide opportunities in the bioscience industry through efforts to accelerate discovery, innovation, and commercialization that drive economic growth and improve quality of life in Ohio. 

Designees that have been chosen to continue to serve are: 

Ohio Aerospace Institute, located in Cleveland, will provide statewide opportunities in aerospace-related engineering fields in partnership with NASA Glenn Research Center and the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. 

Ohio Business Connection, located in Kettering, will provide statewide opportunities in manufacturing and technology through the Manufacturing and Technology Small Business Development Center network. 

Workforce Institute of Lorain County, located in Elyria, will provide regionally based opportunities in Lorain County. 

Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce, located in Dayton, will provide regionally based opportunities in Butler, Clark, Darke, Greene, Miami, Montgomery, Preble, Shelby, and Warren counties. 

PolymerOhio, located in Westerville, will provide statewide opportunities for polymer, plastics, rubber, and advanced materials industries. 

Workforce Initiative Association, located in Canton, will provide regionally based opportunities in Stark and Tuscarawas counties.                                       

Small Business Development Center at Youngstown State University, located in Youngstown, will provide regionally based opportunities in Ashtabula, Columbiana, Mahoning, and Trumbull counties. 

Southeastern Ohio Port Authority, located in Marietta, will provide regionally based opportunities in Washington County and the surrounding communities. 

IT Alliance of Appalachian Ohio, located in Athens, will provide information technology opportunities in the 32 Appalachian counties located in Southeastern Ohio. 

Lake County Port Authority, located in Painesville, will provide regionally based information technology, advanced manufacturing, bioscience and instruments, and control and electronics opportunities in Lake and Geauga counties. 

Established in 2002, the Ohio Third Frontier Internship Program links Ohio college students with rewarding internship opportunities that provide hands-on experience within Ohio's private sector business community. The Program's goal is to build a young, talented workforce for the future and assist students in gaining valuable work experiences that can lead to permanent full-time employment in Ohio after graduation. 

The Ohio Third Frontier Internship Program will reimburse up to 50 percent of the intern's wage, or no more than $3,000, for a 12-month period. Students of at least a sophomore level who are majoring in math, science, or engineering are eligible for program participation. Following an intern's graduation, the business partnering firm will have the opportunity to offer full-time employment to an individual who is well-prepared for a future career with the organization. Businesses that can provide one or more internships in the following fields: Advanced Manufacturing; Advanced Materials; Bioscience; Information Technology; Instruments/Controls/Electronics; or Power and Propulsion, may apply for program benefits.
