FISHER ANNOUNCES CLEAN OHIO GRANTS TO COMMUNITIES
Projects Invigorate Regional Economies, Generate Jobs for Ohioans

COLUMBUS – Lieutenant Governor Lee Fisher today announced that $782,122 in Clean Ohio Assistance Fund grants were approved by the State Controlling Board for the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority and the City of Youngstown.   Clean Ohio Assistance Fund grants are awarded to aid in brownfield redevelopment of Ohio’s urban areas.

“The Clean Ohio Assistance Fund grants, which have been awarded to more than 100 projects throughout the state, support the revitalization of our communities’ physical assets,” said Lt. Governor Fisher, who also serves as Director of the Ohio Department of Development. “We are pleased to offer these grants as valuable tools to help our communities redevelop properties for future growth opportunities.”

The Clean Ohio Assistance Fund is a program of the Clean Ohio Fund, which restores, protects, and connects Ohio's important natural and urban places by preserving green space and farmland, improving outdoor recreation, and by cleaning up brownfields to encourage redevelopment and revitalize communities. The Clean Ohio Fund is part of the $1.57 billion Ohio Bipartisan Job Stimulus Plan, which aims to create new jobs while laying the foundation for future economic prosperity. In the Job Stimulus Plan, $400 million was set aside for the Clean Ohio Fund.

The Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority (Hamilton County) will receive a $148,122 Clean Ohio Assistance Fund grant for a Phase II Environmental Assessment on the Harrison Terminal property located at 1220 Harrison Avenue.  The Phase II work will include the installation of nine shallow monitoring wells, 25 soil borings, data evaluation, modeling, and report preparation.  The assessment will allow an accurate remediation cost estimate to be developed, and allow the developer to pursue the appropriate brownfield and development financing for the project.

The City of Youngstown (Mahoning County) will receive a $634,000 Clean Ohio Assistance Fund grant to conduct remediation activities on the YWCA property located at 25 West Rayen Avenue.  The renovations will turn the current 36 dormitory rooms into 30 apartments for disabled and low-income women and their children.  The main floor will be used for economic and workforce development programs and YWCA corporate offices.  Remaining non-residential portions of the building will include a mix of commercial and YWCA program space.  The project is expected to retain 26 jobs and create six new positions.  The Clean Ohio Assistance Fund grant will be used to abate asbestos and remove general waste for the preparation of the building’s redevelopment activities.

The Clean Ohio Assistance Fund is an open cycle program that provides grant dollars for Phase II Environmental Assessment and Brownfield Cleanup/Public Health Projects. To date, 117 Clean Ohio Assistance Fund projects have been awarded totaling $44.1 million. Of the 117 projects, 40 were for cleanup projects which leveraged more than $800 million and are expected to create more than 4,000 jobs.  For more information on about the Clean Ohio Assistance Fund visit www.clean.ohio.gov.
