FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
March 14, 2005

Columbus, OH -- Lieutenant Governor Bruce Johnson today announced that the Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development (COAD), located in Athens County, will receive $35,000 in Ohio Housing Trust Fund (OHTF) dollars, to help administer the HOMEtech Program, which provides training and technical assistance to nonprofit organizations that are interested in developing affordable housing projects.

“This funding will provide the necessary training and technical assistance so COAD can continue serving the housing needs for citizens in the 30-county region it serves,” said Johnson, who also serves as director of the Ohio Department of Development (ODOD). “The Ohio Housing Trust Fund continues to have a positive impact on hundreds of low-income Ohioans seeking housing assistance.”

As a result of the award, approved by the State Controlling Board today, COAD will provide training and technical assistance to 17 non-profit organizations, train 35 persons to prepare housing project applications and assist with the preparation of 260 affordable housing project applications. The project will leverage $12,000 of other funds.

COAD is a private, non-profit, community-based organization serving rural, mostly Appalachian counties in eastern and southern Ohio. It is comprised of 17 community action agencies that serve a 30-county region. COAD’s mission is to provide voice and representation for its member agencies and the constituencies that they serve, primarily low-income families, children and the elderly.

The OHTF, created in Ohio House Bill 339, provides housing and housing assistance to Ohio’s low- and moderate-income families and individuals. Nonprofits, private developers, lenders, and certain local units of government are eligible to participate in the OHTF programs. The OHTF is funded with recordation fees collected at the county level and remitted to the state treasury. The ODOD administers OHTF dollars.
