Ohio Weatherization Training Center

What is the OWTC?

The Ohio Weatherization Training Center (OWTC) is the sole training center for the State of Ohio's Home Weatherization Program and has been operating since 1980. It also serves as the training center for Ohio's Utility Weatherization and Residential Demand Side Management Programs, as well as for energy efficiency programs from many other states. It specializes in energy efficiency skills and building science theory training. The Center is located in Athens, Ohio and is operated by the Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development.

How Does the OWTC Benefit Ohio?

The OWTC has trained more than 10,000 people over the years and continues to develop as a resource for conservation specialists statewide. This resource has been important to the development of utility energy efficiency programs and programs like the Home Energy Ratings of Ohio. The comprehensive skills taught at the Center are unavailable from other sources in Ohio.

What Skills are Offered?

The Center offers many different levels of skills training. Basic energy auditing; installation skills; conservation theory; advanced blower door diagnostics; combustion appliance testing, repair, and replacement; indoor air quality concerns; and consumer education are among the wide range of subjects covered. From introduction to the state-of-the-art, the training center has kept current on new trends in the industry. The Center can also provide training on the Model Energy Code and ASHRAE 90.1 for local code officials, design professionals, and builders. The Center is the home of the Ohio Center for Lead Abatement. With a combination of classroom, hands-on laboratory instruction, and actual on-site field training, the Center delivers a thorough approach that is based less on what is imagined and more on what can actually be done to homes to correct health, safety, comfort, and energy affordability problems.

What Makes the OWTC Distinctive?

The OWTC is not only a training center, it also offers services including program design and implementation, program evaluation and research, and customized curriculum and manual design. OWTC staff have contributed to the design of the Columbia Gas of Ohio Warm Choice Program and the American Electric Power Targeted Energy Efficiency Program. Current training developments are lead paint and OSHA compliance training. The OWTC's parent organization is also responsible for weatherization production which allows the Center to understand the complexity of introducing new technologies while maintaining delivery of services.
