3rd Annual Ohio Global Summit:
Navigating the Global Marketplace

The Ohio Department of Development’s Global Markets Division, in conjunction with the Association of Ohio Commodores, held the 3rd Annual Ohio Global Summit on Wednesday, September 22, at the Hyatt Regency Columbus. The full-day program covered topics on global trade opportunities in key country markets, regulations and logistics, as well as tools for export financing.

More than 200 attendees participated in the Global Summit and had the opportunity to hear from country and industry experts on a variety of subjects that impact today's exporters.

The annual Governor’s Excellence in Exporting Awards ceremony was held during the Summit luncheon. Development Director Lisa Patt-McDaniel and Grand Commodore Dick Moore, honored 20 Ohio-based companies and organizations with this prestigious award that have achieved international success. The ceremony featured the Exporters of the Year Award given to four distiguished honorees:

Cleveland State University, Nance College of Business of Cleveland - Nonprofit Exporter of the Year

Rexarc International, Inc. of West Alexandria - Small Business Exporter of the Year

Edgetech I.G. Inc., Lauren International of Cambridge - Medium Business Exporter of the Year

SSOE Group of Toledo - Large Business Exporter of the Year

The Exporter of the Year award exemplifies the state's commitment to international trade.

David L. Joyce, Chief Executive OFficer and President of GE Aviation, was the luncheon keynote spreaker during the E-Awards luncheon.

A Networking Reception concluded the Summit and featured Managing Directors from the state’s network of international trade offices.

  • Structuring International Distributor and Representative Agreements (PDF)
    New exporters might assume that the distributorship and sales representative agreements which worked well in the United States are equally satisfactory, with little or no modification, for foreign markets. Unfortunately, this is not the case. In this session, seasoned professionals will clearly spell out the key elements of properly drafted contracts, and the major differences between these documents in the United States and the global marketplace.

  • Emerging Markets – India (PDF)
    According to the US Department of State, India’s infrastructure, transportation, energy, environmental, health care, high-tech, and defense sector requirements for equipment and services will exceed tens of billions of dollars in the mid-term as the Indian economy globalizes and expands. Come to this session to learn about selling to India, whose gross domestic product (GDP), currently growing at over 8 percent, makes it one of the fastest growing economies in the world.

    Have you been avoiding potentially lucrative markets for fear of having your intellectual property stolen? Learn more about how to decide which markets to pursue in order to increase sales yet maintain a sense of security. This session will focus on how to conduct due diligence and take other precautionary measures to protect your products in risky markets.

  • Global E-Commerce: Establishing Successful Online Marketing (PDF)
    Learn how to ensure getting paid and avoid becoming the victim of fraud when selling your products online. In addition, a successful Ohio company that sells domestically and internationally online will share its experiences in conducting internet sales.


  • Emerging Markets – China (PDF)
    Ninety-five percent of the world's consumers live outside of the United States, so if a U.S. business is only selling domestically, they are reaching just a small share of potential customers. This session discusses the latest opportunities for trade and export to China. In 2009, China became Ohio’s third largest export trading partner, which further reinforces the importance of considering China as an export market for Ohio companies.


  • International Negotiations (ppt not available)
    Cross Cultural Simulation focused on learning the various cultural aspects of negotiations internationally. Summit attendees will participate in an interactive seminar with a simulated culture/business negotiation activity along with practical information.
